Milokit at the launch of Barry McGuigans Boxing Academies

The Milokit was proud to support the launch of Barry McGuigans new Boxing Academies that are being run through FE Colleges across the country. The launch at Leicester City's Walker Stadium was a great success and we wish Barry all the best with his vision for the Academies.

The wide-reaching programme is hoped to help disadvantaged youngsters become fit for education and employment, and also help talented young boxers fulfil their potential in sport through the first modern apprenticeship in boxing.

The programme will have four aspects, including a Neets programme aimed at engaging young people back into education and society, initially through a 10-week course, hoped to help develop their motivation, confidence, and basic key skills.

There will also be a Boxing Development Centre, aimed at 16 to 19-year-olds who have already chosen further education. They will receive a full-time education together with up to nine hours of non-contact boxing training every week.

An Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) scheme is a two-year course aimed at students who show ability and aspiration to perform at the highest level within boxing. There will also be an international section of the scheme, offering overseas students a structured development programme.

Milokit® and The Athertons – Friends for Life

Athletes at the start of any sports season expect to have a fair number of niggles before returning to tip-top condition. Mountain Bike Champions, The Athertons have selected the Milokit®, the multi-gym in a bag from Milokit.com as the ideal tool to return them to the to Championship performance.

While Rachel Atherton continues to nurse a very serious shoulder injury following a crash earlier in the year, her brothers, Gee and Dan have seen a radical return from injuries where training options were limited and time was incredibly tight.

At the end of last season Gee dislocated his shoulder while Dan tore his rotator cuff. That obviously had an impact in the training they could do in the off-season. Trusty Milokit® came to the rescue!

As soon as the guys were able to be a lot more dynamic with their shoulders, rather than embark on an upper body strength training programme using weights they set to work with the Milokit®.

With time of the essence, the Milokit® was absolutely perfect to develop the guys’ upper body strength whilst challenging the upper body proprioception, balance and control at the same time.  Packing into a tiny bag and weighing only two kg, a Milokit® is travelling with them on the World Cup circuit to maintain all over body strength, control and it is part of the pre-race warm up.

Rachel unfortunately dislocated her shoulder in her road riding accident in training in California - again the Milokit® is going to play a crucial role in the rehabilitation of her shoulder to get her back to full fitness as soon as possible.

Their world-class trainer, Darren Roberts put a fine point on it with his statement:

“As defending UCI World Champions - we're committed to only using the best possible methods and rationales in the physical preparation and re-habilitation of the riders.  The Milokit® certainly fits into that functional, challenging role and is a key part of our athletic development plan”

JOE LLOYD WINS THE BITISH AND MIDLANDS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Joe Lloyd’s successful return to the track continued as he followed up his win at the Midland Championships, by winning the British Championships in Birmingham.  Joe has also been selected by GB to compete at the Worlds in a couple of weeks.

BRIAN ASHTON MBE LINKS IN WITH THE MILOKIT®

Having someone of Brian’s ability and experience immediately seeing the benefits that the Milokit® can bring to sport is invaluable. Brian saw the Whole Body Stability® (shoulder, knee, ankle as well as core) and functional strength the Milokit® gives an athlete the moment he saw it in use. The Milokit® is now being used by International Rugby players, Athletes, Footballers, Tennis players, Swimmers, Archers, World Champion Cyclist and more.  Brian’s vision to look outside the box and see things others do not, is a skill a lot of coaches never get and we are very proud and privileged to have Brian linked in with us on the Milokit®.

Haskins brushes Burkinshaw aside

Bristol's Lee Haskins retained his British super-flyweight title with victory over Sheffield-based Ross Burkinshaw in Sunderland. In his first title defence, Haskins overpowered his rival with his punches being met with scant reply. The inexperienced Burkinshaw's misery was ended when the bout was stopped in the fourth round.

"I’ve used other forms of suspension training before but the natural feel and much more specific movements I can do with the Milokit® for boxing, make it the best by miles, there is just no comparison."
Lee Haskins, British super-flyweight Champion.

Larry Godfrey picked for the World Archery GB Team

Larry follows up shooting his best scores with getting picked for the team to go the Worlds in Korea this August.

Athertons partner up with the Milokit

After a season that brought 2 World Champions, 6 World Cup wins and a World Cup title it was always going to be hard to find room for improvement for the Atherton family. After the Animal Commencal team season review it was obvious improvements could be made. The first step in the teams program was taken by building a purpose built gym at the team's headquarter in North Wales.

The Athertons fresh look at physical preparation started in 2007 when Red Bull appointed Darren Roberts to over see their training, working closely with the team Darren has implemented a tough schedule which has seen an amazing improvement on the trios performances. Bringing the Milokit on board will ensure the team keeps pushing boundaries in the sport of Downhill mountain biking.

Dan, Gee and Rachel Atherton

About THE ATHERTONS

Current Downhill mountain biking World Champions Gee(23) and Rachel Atherton(20) have elder brother Dan to thank for getting them into the sport. Dan(26) who won Round 2 of the World Cup series last season started the family riding BMX bikes at the tender age of 8. Progressing to mountain bikes in the late nineties the family have taken their bike riding to the very top of the sport. Competing in the UCI World Cup Series on the Animal Commencal team the family are without doubt the most successful family in cycling.

Mountain Biking Conditioning

Explode of the start, pushing down with one leg, pulling up with the other, bike going side to side body staying in control, turning one way then the other, then taking off and landing. The ability to do all of this doesn’t just take good strength and core stability; it needs Whole Body stability and strength. Transferring power depends on the body’s ability to use all the power it has, if you have a weak link then you are only as strong as that link. If you can squat double your body weight in the gym in a nice straight line with good technique, powering up through your heels (you don’t ride with your heels) that’s great. But when you’re on the bike, the ground isn’t stable; your ankle, knees and shoulder stability is working overtime. If you’re weak in any one of these areas then that double body weight squat isn’t being transfer through the pedals.

The Milokit® works not only the major muscle groups but also the stabilising and supporting muscles. We can give you specific exercises that match the position you are in on the bike. This way we can make sure the muscles you need to be working are working and not switching off because the major muscle have taken over, which happens when you do exercises in the supported position (bench press). You are not in a supported position on the bike so don’t strengthen in a supported position, you need the ability to control your body and the bike at speed over uneven ground. You do this by having strong shoulders, knees, ankles and core, as well as strong (not big) major muscles. We are looking at power without the bulk, i.e. climbers, great body strength to weight ratios, muscular endurance and anaerobic conditioning (your ability to move explosively). All of this you get from training with the Milokit®.
